bibble bibble

Over the summer my friends and i went on many trips around the country, including the madness that was land's end to john o'groats. Following this theme weve been on little roadtrips to each others houses, (including a trip to see gilbert's old choir, dressed in suits)Most recently a trip to my humble english abode was undertaken, dropping a friend off in southampton "on the way". The aim of the trip was to pick up a new bass amp, the 5th bass amp I now own!
we encontered some interesting sights along the way, not least this beast which sat behind us at the lights. It worryingly followed us for a long while, but we shook it off once it spied some trees down a dirt path.

Stuff and nonsense

Wow, what a week!

well, not really. Apart from the inauguration of President Obama and the first airing of my friends new radio show not much important stuff has happened, but it has been busy!

Because of exams at Cardiff Uni I've had to cover other shifts at the union which means i get to do club nights! It makes a change being able to walk around the different venues and hearing dance, Drum and Bass and Rock instead of being stuck in a booth for hours listening to what can be painful comedy.

If you had to create the sound of bricks falling or of a machine gun on a diving aircraft how would you go about it? That was the problem posed by my classmates and I as we tried to record a goon show script for an assignment.
How did we do it? We dropped some shoes down a thin wooden staircase for the bricks and hit a latch on a flightcase with a rubber mallet for the machine gun! Fun Times.

It seems cardiff is sponsored by Logic systems. I went to the open mic night at The Globe on Albany Road, it's an old theatre with a balcony and two bars. Logic mons, Logic FOH, i think they were driven by Logic amps as well!
The sound was clear and the acts were all very good, with one coming on for an encore demanded by the audience!

While looking at another venue in cardiff (Sub29) I found that they use the same logic ethos system that was originally put into the globe. that makes 4 venues so far using logic systems!

On a completly different note, I'm getting serious GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome) for the new 17" Macbook Pro. Not the one with the shiny screen that you can't use during the day, but the model with the old style display, making the new Pro look almost like the old one, but better!
Add to that its 8 hour battery life and amazingly fast graphics and CPU, I know it's gonna be on my wishlist for a good long time.

Trip to the Bay

As part of my course I have to learn about live sound in the context of a music venue. The good people of The Point in cardiff bay showed us their venue's PA system today.

The point is based in an old church and uses a logic line array run by lab amps and a DBX Driverack PA. At FOH is a Midas Venice, Audient graphics, Lexicon FX and Behringer gates and comps.
The house engineer Steve showed us around the system and explained the ins and outs of running gigs in the point, including some of the more bizarre stories that always crop up in the touring world!

Hopefully I shall get to go back to "work" a gig, although the class is quite big so ill have to squeeze myself in somewhere!
